Gondola Art Stroll #3
Race to the Finish Line
by Sally and Jessica Neilson-Berg – Luminous Arts
Gondola Artwork Didactic
The critters have gathered for the grand race of their lifetime! The powder is perfect, the day is clear, and the trees barely have a chance to notice who is whizzing by. Gold, silver, and bronze await them at the finish line and the excitement is palpable as the win is anyone’s game!
We wanted to create the feel of movement as the animals made their way down the mountain. So, we added a fan to blow foam beads into the air to create a blustery visual wind and snow effect emphasizing winter.
There is also a snowflake light effect to give the appearance of snowfall. During the day, it might give some subtle sense of movement. At night, it looks like snowflakes are blustering around in the scene.
The snowy hillside top was planned to cheat the hillside and make it more viewable from different eye levels and viewer perspectives.
We have been reusing and recycling items from the gondola art piece we did last year, using materials we have at home, as well as acquiring items from a local theatre. We ordered as many items as we can at a time to minimize our carbon footprint through shipping.

Meet Luminous Arts – Sally & Jess
Luminous Arts is comprised of a 2 person team, Sally and Jessica Neilson-Berg. They are a married couple who have worked together in the past to create 2 public art pieces for the Art Pianos for All project. One was on display on Park City’s Main Street, the other “Train of Wonders,” is an interactive art piece on permanent display at the Ledges Event Center in Coalville, UT. It is a vintage train with a piano for a base and the assemblage is constructed entirely from found objects.
