In 2003, Canyons Resort Village in Park City commissioned its first permanent outdoor sculptures, marking the beginning of what would become a growing collection throughout the village. BYU art students Chelsy Smith and John Gumaelius were selected through a competitive review process to create works that reflected the resort’s style and theme. Each artist received up to $4,000 in material funding from the resort. Smith’s sculpture, Elements of Wind, is mounted on an 11,500-pound rock, while Gumaelius’s Gran Guppet is an interactive, bird-like metal figure standing ten feet tall. Both artists will be honored at a ceremony on June 5 and awarded $4,000. The resort hopes to continue this initiative as an ongoing tradition.
